Microgreens

What are Microgreens?

Don’t worry, you are not the only one asking! Microgreens are the result of the cotyledon growth stage, which is when the first couple of leaves from a plant appear.
The “cotyledon” usually becomes the plants’ first set of leaves. They’re formed in the seed, and function in the same way as leaves do when it comes to photosynthesis—both convert light energy into chemical energy that the plant will use to grow.
The leaves and stems are then eaten, and the seeds are started in soil or peat moss, as opposed to in water like sprouts. The soil is what gives the plants nutrients. Microgreens are vegetable or herb seeds grown for 7-10 days. Although little in size, these greens are a vitamin and antioxidant powerhouse. Studes have shown that microgreens are loaded with nutrients, such vitamins, C, E, and K, lutein, and beta-carotene, 40 fold more than the mature leaves of the same plants.

You will see microgreens in restaurants adding colour and elegance to a dish. Don’t be intimidated by these delicate greens, you can add them to your salads, smoothies, soups and stews, sandwiches, or just eat them raw. Each green has a different texture and flavour, giving you a new way to be creative and have fun in the kitchen.

Our microgreens are grown in a specialized indoor grow room. This means that we can grow fresh greens 364 days a year. Now i’m sure you are wondering, what is a specialized grow room? Microgreens require a clean and well ventilated environment with a stable temperature. Our room has FRP walls allowing us to fulling disinfect the room floor to ceiling. Our tables and shelving are all stainless steel and NSF certified. All of this allows us to have a very controlled environment for producing the highest quality product.

Our microgreens are sold in compostable 24oz containers with labels printed with food safe inks. Each package is stamped with the date the greens were harvested so you know exactly how fresh they are. Our microgreens are sold in bulk for wholesale customers as well.
