Free Range Heritage Pork
As part of our full circle farming, our pigs are being raised in the forest working the land that we will slowly clear. Our pigs spend their day eating the moss off the trees, digging up roots and doing whatever they like. They are in a 1/4 acre forested area and once they clear it they will be moved to another area. We believe that our animals should live as natural of a life as possible. This means foraging, and being happy pigs. We supplement their foraging with fruit and vegetables, nuts and organic whole grains. We do not feed any corn or soy.
Our pigs are a mixture of berkshire, large black and old spot. These pigs are not bred from commercial production. They have great natural instincts. In commercial pig production, pigs are confined and fed a constant supply of commercial feed usually including corn and soy. Our pigs will grow slower while running in the forest and eating.a healthy varied diet.
Heritage Forest Raised Pork: We sell our pigs by half or quarter pig.
Half Pig: When you purchase a 1/2 pig from us we charge $6.00/lb hanging weight. (Hanging weight refers to the weight of the carcass after the hair, blood, and other inedible parts are removed.) Hanging weight is usually 70-75% of the live weight. For a half pig your hanging weight would be 85 – 100lbs. At $6/lbs a half pig will cost roughly $510 – $600, which includes the price of slaughter and basic cut and wrap. If you would like any smoking or curing there is an additional $1.75/lbs (or $2/lbs for nitrate free smoking/curing) charge. The bonus to purchasing half a pig is you can choose your cuts, smoking, sausage flavours etc. We will deal directly with the processing facility on your behalf. Please note, there is no guarantee that the processing facility will not make a mistake when doing custom orders.
Quarter Pig: When you purchase a quarter pig from us we charge $6.50/lb hanging weight. (Hanging weight refers to the weight of the carcass after the hair, blood, and other inedible parts are removed.) Hanging weight is usually 70-75% of the live weight. For a half pig your hanging weight would be 40- 50lbs. At $6.50/lbs a quarter pig will cost roughly $260- $325, which includes the price of slaughter and basic cut and wrap. If you would like any smoking or curing there is an additional $1.75/lbs (or $2/lbs for nitrate free smoking/curing) charge. With quarter pig packages, we choose the smoking, sausages etc. If you place your order prior to November 20 we can try to accommodate some choice. As we cannot select custom options for quarter pig, only half pig, we are limited in the options that we can offer.
All our meat is slaughtered and processed in a BC government inspected facility here on Vancouver Island.
Our first round of heritage pork will be available for pick up the week prior to Christmas. All reservations for 1/2 pigs need to be in prior to NOVEMBER 20th. Any reservations sent in after this point will not have a choice in what cuts, smoking and curing they received.
